Things To Do

Dunkeld is the oldest town in Highland Perthshire.  It is a cathedral town which sits on the banks of the beautiful River Tay.  On the opposite bank lies the Victorian village of Birnam.  They are linked by a magnificent Telford Bridge which was built in 1809.  Dunkeld has a great selection of services, shops, galleries and bars.

Birnam has much to offer too.  Beatrix Potter spent many childhood holidays along the banks of the River Tay and is reputed to have written 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' on one of her trips here.  The newly extended and renovated Birnam Institute has an exhibition and garden devoted to Beatrix Potter, a café and an Arts Programme to suit everyone's tastes.  The majestic Birnam Oak of Shakespeare's play 'Macbeth' is also worth a visit.

Loch of Lowes - 2 miles away from Little Puddockwells is the Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve situated on the edge of the Loch with an observation hide with telescopes overlooking an Osprey eyrie where the Ospreys are on full view.  You could also see the Great Crested Grebe and otters.

Castle Trail - There are many castles to visit including Glamis Castle, Scone Palace and Blair Castle which is protected by Europe's only private army.

Whisky Trail - Edradour Distillery, Aberfeldy Distillery, Blair Atholl, Glenturret and lots more....

Antiques Trail - between Perth and Dundee.

Shopping - a great selection of gift/craft/antique shops locally and if you take the train from Birnam you are just over an hour away from Edinburgh (Harvey Nichols, Jenners, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh Zoo) and Glasgow (Museums, Art Galleries, etc).

Theatres - Birnam Institute, Perth, Pitlochry

Dining Out - There are some great local pubs (The Taybank with regular music sessions) and places to eat such as Darjeeling's  and Palmerstons in Dunkeld.  Perth and Pitlochry also have some fabulous places to eat.

Golf - there are many golf courses in the area including Blairgowrie (Rosemount), St Andrews, Gleneagles, Taymouth Castle and Dunkeld & Birnam's 18 hole course boasts the most spectacular scenery.
